Berkshire edge editorials11/22/2023 ![]() Setting the business media straight, a group of top economists and law professors responded with a letter to Minnesota's tax conference committee, detailing their support for worldwide combined reporting and refuting objections: Even the Wall Street Journal joined in, targeting civil servants with a condescending critique (later proved erroneous) of a revenue estimate. They threw it all against the wall like day-old spaghetti to see what stuck and - surprise! - the business media caught every noodle. The wonks tried to bore you into surrender with complaints of complexity, calculations and cries of "administrative burden!" The scaremongers foretold trade wars and endless litigation. Minnesota was on track to adopt this easy fix until my old friends got up to their old tricks, trying to kill sound tax policy with a one-two punch of tedium and threats. With "worldwide combined reporting," the state taxes it fair and square.įor precisely that reason, many leading experts love worldwide combined reporting while tax avoiders - like my former colleagues who make a killing as enablers - absolutely hate it. Move your Minnesota profits around your pockets as much as you like, smart guy. Just ash-can the water's edge election and replace it with "worldwide combined reporting." That rule reflects reality: It treats those two pockets as what they are - parts of a single pair of pants. Worse, hardworking Minnesota families pick up the tab through higher taxes and lost public services.Įnough bad news here's the good: It's easy to shut this tax avoidance down. By moving that cash with some slick restructuring - the kind of miserable trickery I was really good at - you cheated Minnesota out of millions in tax revenue. ![]() ![]() Your pants are a multinational corporation, that wad of cash is billions in profits from sales to Minnesota customers, and your right pocket is a subsidiary in an offshore tax haven. The money is still yours it's still in your pants but now it escapes taxation. But Minnesota can't touch your right pocket, so you move that cash over. The left pocket's stuffed with a wad of cash that the state is entitled to tax. Imagine it this way: You're wearing your favorite pair of jeans. Then as now, the culprit is the "water's edge election" - a nasty little accounting rule that allows big corporate groups to shift their Minnesota-taxable profits into offshore tax havens where they escape taxation entirely. Minnesota could strike a major victory by passing a tax bill that includes "worldwide combined reporting." Allow me to explain:ĭuring my decades as a professional enabler of my clients' tax-dodging, avoiding Minnesota corporate income tax was easier than falling off a log after a long day of portaging in the BWCA. Right now, the Minnesota Legislature is deadlocked in a battle between tax cheats and tax justice. Now I work to shift the balance of power toward inclusive prosperity. I was executive tax counsel at a Fortune 10 multinational corporation and leader of a 600-person "state tax minimization" group at a Big 4 accounting firm. Barney waiting for santa 199611/22/2023 After Irene Corey failed to deliver a plushy, huggable T-Rex costume that would be suitable for the producers' needs, producer John Grable reached out and hired friend Jamie Ruth Conner to serve as the series art director and to design a costume that would be more suitable for the character that was being developed.Īfter Conner's costume designs were approved by Leach and Parker, costume construction by Suzanne Lockridge took place. They hired Irene Corey Design Associates to build the dinosaur costume. The bear concept was eventually scrapped due to Leach's son having an interest in dinosaurs after visiting a Science Place exhibit.Īfter the initial concept was devised, The Lyons Group hired various local production crew personnel to help further develop the show. They also concluded that imagination needed to play a big role, as well as having loving messages. įrom their research, around twenty essential concepts were devised, such as using live-action instead of animation so children could better relate, having children as role-models, featuring simple music and having a familiar setting. The duo took inspiration from their own childhood programs like Romper's Room, Captain Kangaroo and The Mickey Mouse Club while also combining aspects of the then current kids' programs like Sesame Street and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Both Leach and Parker began testing videos on their children, taking notes of what worked and what didn't work, as well as going to different preschools for research. Parker also had a 2-year-old child named Kaitlin. When Sheryl pitched Barney & The Backyard Gang to her father-in-law Richard, he asked that Kathy help to develop the character and show concept. Sheryl's idea was brought to production at The Lyons Group, ![]() Leach, who was Sheryl's father-in-law, agreed to back her with the project with $700,000 of his own money. The board she proposed to turned her down. At the time Sheryl Leach was working at DLM, Inc. ![]() Sheryl Leach proposed a preschool video series, which eventually would be Barney & The Backyard Gang, to DLM, Inc (Developmental Learning Materials). Leach thought the idea of a talking blanket and teddy bear interacting with children were a neat idea, however, the blanket concept was too hard to pull off. Her initial thought was the notice of children carrying snugly security objects, such as blankets and teddy bears. This prompted Leach to develop a show herself. ![]() At the time, the only thing that could hold Patrick’s attention was a “Wee Sing” video. At this time, the only preschool aged programs around were Sesame Street and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, however, they appealed to a larger age range, rather than strictly toddlers. In fall 1987, Leach was stuck in a traffic jam thinking about the lack of videos that held the attention of her 2-year-old son, Patrick. In the films produced from 1924 to 1927, the clown's name was hyphenated, "Ko-Ko". The illustration at the heading is an example by Huemer. Most importantly, Huemer set the drawing style that gave the series its distinctive look. Huemer created Ko-Ko's canine companion, Fitz. He redesigned the "Clown" for more efficient animation production and moved the Fleischers away from their dependency upon the Rotoscope for fluid animation. ![]() The "Clown" was named Ko-Ko in 1924 when Dick Huemer came to the studio as their animation supervisor, having animated on the Mutt and Jeff series for eight years. Their films were distributed through the States Rights method through Warner Brothers, Winkler Pictures, Standard, and finally The Red Seal Pictures Corporation. The series was very popular, and in 1921 Max and Dave Fleischer formed their own studio, Out of the Inkwell Films, Inc. Fleischer wrote, and animated the early shorts along with Roland Crandall, with Dave directing the live action filming, performing on camera as "The Clown" for Rotoscoping, and assisted with the animation and Roto tracings. Aside from the novelty of the Rotoscoped animation, this series combined live-action and animation centered on Max Fleischer as the creative cartoonist and "Master" of "The Clown." "The Clown" would often slip from Max's eye and go on an adventure, pull a prank on his creator. Bray Studios, and in 1918 they began Out of the Inkwell as an entry in the Bray Pictograph Screen Magazine released through Paramount (1918), and later Goldwyn (1919-1921). Bray, he was hired as production manager for John R. īecause of the realistic effects displayed in his sample films, the result of Fleischer's Rotoscope, and a past relationship with John R. A 1922 sheet music drawing makes the connection more explicit, saying "Out of the Inkwell, the New Yama Yama Clown", with a picture of Koko. Both costumes have white gloves with long fingers, white foot coverings, and a hat with the same white pom-pom as in front. The white face with slit eyes was a design common among German circus clowns. Dave's clown costume was clearly inspired by one worn by Bessie McCoy, with the additions of a black ruffled collar replacing the big white bow, three pom-pom front buttons, and a prominent cone-shaped cap also with three pom-poms. "The Clown"'s appearance owes much to The Yama Yama Man. After tracing the film footage amounting to some 2,500 drawings and a year's work, the character that would eventually become Koko the Clown was born, although he did not have a name until 1924. Fleischer filmed his brother Dave in a clown costume. ![]() The use of the clown character came after two previous tests and a search for an original character. The character originated when Max Fleischer invented the rotoscope, a device that allowed for animation to be more lifelike by tracing motion picture footage of human movement. Throughout the series, he goes on many adventures with his canine companion “Fitz the Dog”, who would later evolve into Bimbo in the Betty Boop cartoons. He first appeared as the main protagonist in Out of the Inkwell (1918–1929), a major animated series of the silent era. Koko the Clown is an animated cartoon character created by Max Fleischer. I hope these verses, easy to find, remind of you His faithfulness and help in your life! Some have said there are 365 “Fear Nots” in the Bible, one for every day. In calm times and in crisis times, we can find a refuge of hope in the truths God has shared with us in His Word. Whether you’re practicing “social distancing” or “sheltering in place”, take some time out to dig in to some of these stories and be encouraged that you have a great God who loves you very much! Fear Not: 145 Bible Verses on Encouragement By Ed Taylor Each one of these Bible verses represents a real moment when someone was afraid. If you have already crowned Jesus, Lord of your life, then this promise is for you: The Lord will strengthen you, help you, and uphold you with his righteous right hand, for “The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him” (Psalm 25:14).NOTE: As the world is working through the real fears associated with COVID-19, we’re sharing a “Genesis through Revelation” look at fear in the Bible. If you have not bowed your knee to King Jesus, this invitation is God’s extended hand to you: believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved (Acts 16:31 ESV). But when our relationship has been restored with God through Jesus Christ-through his death on the cross and resurrection for the forgiveness of sin-there’s nothing left to fear. And if there’s anything we should fear, it would be that there is something wrong or lacking in our relationship with God. Nothing happens outside his jurisdiction. ![]() Throughout the Bible, we learn that God is in complete control over all things. If there is anything to fear, it’s God himself. ![]() But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. God repeats the same argument in the New Testament in Luke 12:4-5 (ESV), “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. God looked his nation in the eyes and said, “Don’t be afraid.” God’s argument here in Isaiah 41:10 is, “ If what is so deeply scary to you is something I have complete authority over, and I am on your side, what do you have to fear?” God continues his speech: “But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend… fear not, for I am with you be not dismayed, for I am your God…’” (v.8-10). With war on the horizon, weapons were forged and fighters got to work (Isaiah 41:5-6). In this verse, God is telling his people that he is in control of the most frightening and powerful man on the planet.īut that military might of a man kept marching on trembling nations, set to destroy. Yet God claimed to be the enabling power behind this king’s victories. This is God speaking: “Who stirred up one from the east whom victory meets at every step? …he tramples kings underfoot…he pursues them and passes on safely, by paths his feet have not trod” (v.2-3 ESV).
